I doubt you will find a free bankruptcy attorney, but you should be able to find one that will give you a free consultation along with advice.
If you decide that bankruptcy is the route you need to take, you can do it yourself. Here is a link to a site that provides the forms: http://www.doityourselfbankruptcyforms.com/
Bankruptcy should be your last option. Depending on whether the debts you owe are secured or unsecured there may be other options. If you owe a few thousand dollars of unsecured debt (credit cards), bankruptcy could wipe that out, but would it help that much. Even if you got rid of all of your debt would you be OK? Do you owe tens of thousands in unsecured debt? Is it a big car payment that is causing the problem or a home mortgage?
You will probably take a hit to your credit no matter what you do, but it may not need to be as big as bankruptcy.
There is no free lawyer. Eventually, they all collect their pay. Stop paying the bills altogether and save every single dime you can get your hands on. It is going to cost between $800 and $1000.
